Null and Void is the first book of The Last Kitsune series by J.S. Scheffel. Raised by her adoptive Troll parents, Taisetsuna Jotun (Tai) has never displayed any powers of her own, and it has earned her the moniker of Null among the supernatural community. However, an impromptu attack by a stranger inadvertently unlocks Tai's dormant abilities, leading to the attacker's death. Placed under the protection of Ash Montgomery, a shapeshifter, Tai has a hard time navigating her feelings toward Ash and learning to control her newfound powers. Meanwhile, her old neighbor Uka is more than she appears. Additionally, Council members are turning up dead or missing. With the threat of Inugami well and truly alive, Tai must be on constant vigilance. What is Viktor Asmuth's end goal? Can Tai live up to her family legacy?
An urban fantasy thriller doused in suspense, magic, and mystery, Null and Void is a stellar start to what promises to be an enthralling supernatural saga. J.S. Scheffel has built a truly remarkable and unique world filled with all kinds of fantastical creatures, including vampires, shapeshifters, orcs, trolls, elves, ghouls, and many more. Moving the plot at a brisk pace, the author takes you on a wild rollercoaster of a ride you won't want to end. Scheffel's characters are layered and very compelling. Complemented by the immersive worldbuilding, the story becomes even more enjoyable for the reader. Apart from Tai and Ash, I also liked the personalities of Uka, Magoo, and Nico -- a fun-loving vampire drag queen who loves to party. Fans of supernatural fiction will have a blast with this one!
