Null and Void by J.S. Scheffel is a captivating tale that explores the life of Tai Jotun, a paramedic raised by supernatural parents, but lacking any extraordinary abilities herself, earning her the label of Null. She struggles to find her place in a world where she's seen as an outcast by both humans and supernatural beings. Tai's life takes a dramatic turn when her only supernatural friend, Nico the vampire, invites her to a gathering of magical creatures, where she's assaulted by a human with superhuman strength. This traumatic event inadvertently awakens Tai's dormant abilities, setting off a chain reaction that changes her life forever.
Null and Void is the thrilling start to The Last Kitsune series by J.S. Scheffel. It effectively establishes a captivating backdrop for future stories and introduces readers to a diverse cast of characters. The narration is casual, with humorous moments and natural dialogue that brings the characters to life. The novel also tackles thought-provoking themes such as bullying, self-identity, friendship, family, and the influence of money and power, making it a compelling read for those who enjoy character-driven fiction. Tai is a complex and dynamic character who embodies the struggles and triumphs of a young woman trying to find her place in the world. Her relationships with her friends and family, as well as her romantic interests, add depth to her character, making it easy for readers to become invested in her journey. I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves supernatural novels with mystery and complex characters. Overall, this is great work, and I cannot wait to read more from this series and author.
